ABPA board member Jan Hartman will lead a lively discussion with permissions experts about the ins, outs, and pitfalls of permissions, covering text and copyright permissions; fair use and public domain; licensing manuscript and published works; licensing printed works for ancillary products; art and image research, rights, and permissions; motion picture permissions; and the difference between “permissions wants” and “permissions needs.”

Meet the Experts

Nicole DiMella is a lifelong art student, working as a photographer, with photographers, and with photography her entire career. Doing business as Lemon Snap Picture Services, she consults publishers, authors, and other content creators on image research and rights clearance and permissions. She was going to be a rock n’ roll photographer but instead lives in New Jersey and drives two kids around in a minivan.

BJ Berti is an experienced and collaborative trade publishing professional with editorial and rights experience, specializing in design-focused nonfiction books and working with a wide range of publishing and creative people. She offers services in editing and writing, content development, content acquisition, rights acquisition, creative project management, editorial photography, and research.

Fred Courtwright is founder and president of The Permissions Company, LLC, based in Boca Raton, FL, a complete permissions service company, administering rights and seeking permissions for his clients. He has worked in the copyright permissions field for more than thirty years. Before starting The Permissions Company in 1997, he held the position of Permissions Manager at W. W. Norton & Company and Permissions Coordinator at Macmillan Publishing Company. Clients include publishers, authors, agents, literary executors, and book packagers.

Jan Hartman of Jan Hartman Books is an independent book editor and packager focused on nonfiction topics including design, lifestyle, culture, history, nature, landscape, sustainability, and wellness.
